July 2009: There is an urgent need for a deeper evangelical understanding of the theology of the cross with regard to suffering, persecution and martyrdom for Christ and its relevance for the global church in mission. Such a theology has the potential to counterbalance an evangelical tendency towards triumphalism and to complement the views of other theological traditions. The purpose of the envisaged study process and expert consultation is to reach a common understanding among evangelical scholars who have written on the topic in various contexts. This will result in a statement, journal articles and a compendium. The main sponsor of the consultation is the World Evangelical Alliance Religious Liberty Commission in co-operation with some other commissions. The International Institute for Religious Freedom of the WEA will organize the consultation with about 20 expert participants, theological advisors, and some observers.
